Some have larger roles than others, but seeing such a diverse range of persons and personalities lends a sense of realism to a clearly unreal world. Houston tells the history of these symbols in a very economical way, not falling down any academic rabbit holes. It’s revealed (but never shown) that a character is having an affair; however, the other party wishes to end the clandestine relationship. Entertaining and perceptive, Shady Hollow is fast-paced and witty, with characters that jump off the page and a hugely satisfying mystery to solve.
