About this deal

I really hope that there’s a sequel to this book, where Mum and Leila discuss their own journey from Damascus and grow back into their familiar closeness. I loved Julia and the Shark, their first collaboration and was, very excited to learn of Leila and the Blue Fox.

Leila has experienced the trauma of war, fleeing her home country, as well as the change wrought in her family dynamics. When I read Julia and the Whale in January this year, I was instantly captivated by the visuals and the emotional narrative. I wasn’t a very big fan of the mother-daughter relationship in this book (especially compared to the one in Julia and the Shark which felt a lot more fleshed out). It has been sitting on my shelf for a while but in the pre-Christmas madness, I hadn’t managed to get to it.It then moved on across the ice to Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada (2,179 miles, 3,506 km) in 76 days – at which point tthe GPS tracker broke down! Kiran cleverly takes the journey of a fox, Miso in this story and tells it parallel to the healing journey of a mother and daughter as they track the fox. It remains one of my top books of 2022, so I knew I had to fit Leila and the Blue Fox into my reading list as well. My edition also has the cutest paw prints stencilled on the edges which really passed the vibe check as well).

This is a very cleverly written book and we see the similarities in the stories, Leila is confused about why her mum isn't living with her, but through their new journey with the for starts to understand. Such a tough reality for a child to come to terms with, but with honesty earlier down the line it can save thousands in therapy in the future. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. All the while, she finds herself drawn to the fate of this lone animal, tracking him across the wilderness and becoming the teams social media manager. The dynamic is frayed and ever-shifting; Leila hasn't seen her mother in six years and is desperate for answers. I would recommend adults to read the novel, not just because it is a wonderful book for any age, but because there are many aspects of the plot which can lead to discussion and sharing.

Leila, a Syrian refugee, lives with family in London and is visiting her mother in the far north of Norway. Leila and the Blue Fox tells the story of parallel journeys by Miso, an Artic fox and Leila, whose mum has chosen her work over her motherhood. That includes the conversations this little fox’ journey brings up; stories of a similar one Leila and Amani undertook when Leila was only a baby. A Girl of Ink and Stars was an instant bestseller, and brought its author much well-deserved attention. From bestselling author Kiran Millwood Hargrave and acclaimed illustrator Tom de Freston – the duo behind the award-winning Julia and the Shark – Leila and the Blue Fox tells the breathtaking story of one small fox’s journey across the Arctic, and one girl’s journey to find the mother she thought she’d lost.If you haven’t read Julia yet, but enjoy the same brand of hard-hitting middle-grade that transcends age-range as I do; I guess you have two beautiful books to add to your TBR instead of one.

La historia en sí se me hizo mucho más oscura de lo que esperaba jajaj tipo no es un libro para niños común y corriente.Kiran Millwood Hargrave and illustrator Tom de Freston have created a quite beautiful book that works for all ages and looks simply gorgeous. Leila travelling to Norway to reunite with her mother while Miso, a blue fox, journeys across a continent.
