About this deal

Maintain the temperature and stir frequently until the dye is absorbed. You’ll want to pay extra attention to the dye bath (agitating constantly and monitoring the temperature) for the first 20 minutes, but after that you can taper off, turning down the heat and stirring less frequently for a few hours. You can turn off the heat and allow it to sit overnight if required. If dyeing natural fibers like cotton or linen, mix 1 cup 240 mL of salt with 4 cups 950 mL of hot water. If dyeing silk or nylon, mix 1 cup 240 mL of white vinegar with 4 cups 950 mL of hot water. Add salt or vinegar solution to the basin.

With the growing popularity of front loading washing machines, we have found that dye may stain the plastic parts around the machine if it is not cleaned up right away; so it’s important to clean up immediately after dyeing, which we detail how below. Front Loader Instructions With the growing popularity of front loading washing machines, we have found that dye may stain the plastic parts around the machine if it is not cleaned up right away; so it’s important to clean up immediately after dyeing, which we detail how below. If the garment you want to dye contains more than 35% synthetic material, you should use Rit’s dye for synthetic fabrics called Rit DyeMore. Rit DyeMore is specially made for synthetic fabrics like polyester, acrylic, acetate, plus blends that contain those fibers.

Cover work area with plastic table cover or newspaper and have paper towels handy to protect against any possible spills. Fill a plastic container or stainless steel sink with enough water for the fabric to move freely. We recommend using three gallons of water for every pound of fabric. The water should ideally be 140°F 60°C. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and add to the dyebath.

We do not recommend using a front loading washing machine to dye extra large items or multiple items. I have a favorite dress from Boden. Boden is my favorite place to shop for work dresses (and even some casual dresses). They are expensive, but they hold up very well. And in the one case that I had a dress that didn’t hold up very well, Boden sent me a replacement free of charge.

Choosing the right dye for your fabrics is half the battle. Many garments will be made up of fabrics like linen, cotton, rayon, or polyester blends. Set water temperature to the hottest possible setting and a wash cycle of at least 30 minutes or longer and start the cycle. Finally, I’d recommend at least one run through your washing machine alone (without anything you’re worried about staining) to be sure all the dye has washed out.

It can be paired with pretty much anything for work—a cardigan, a blazer, or nothing at all. It fits me really well and I feel great wearing it. But after a few years, it is faded. This isn’t super surprising because I wear it once per week. I don’t have a huge work wardrobe—about 5 years ago I drastically reduced the size of my closet, including both off work and work clothes. When desired color is achieved, remove from dyebath. Fabric will look darker when wet and will dry lighter. Squeeze out excess dye. Note: This dye fixativereduces bleeding and fading and enhances. It works on cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie, and rayon. For best results, use immediately after dyeing, before rinsing completely and laundering. Step 5: Drain Bath, Rinse Again, and WashFill a stainless steel pot with enough water for the fabric to move freely. We recommend using 3 gallons 11.5 L of water for every pound 1/2 kilogram of fabric.

Before dyeing, remove any visible stains on the garment. This will help achieve uniform color results when dyeing. Pre-wash item in warm, soapy water. This helps to remove any finishes that may interfere with dye absorption. Leave damp and set aside. To clean the washing machine: Wipe around the inside of the lid and pour a little bleach through the internal dispenser (if there is one) as dyes can get into these areas. Then, fill washer to the highest water level there is and select the hottest water temperature setting. Add detergent with 2 cups 470 mL of chlorine bleach and run a full wash cycle with 3 old towels. Pour the dye solution into the dispenser. Then, pour the salt or vinegar solution. Flush the dispenser thoroughly with 4 cups 950 mL more of hot tap water. Test color by dipping a paper towel into the dyebath. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.Depending on your fabric, you may wish to follow the in-sink rinse with a run through the washing machine, or even just pop it in for a spin cycle, but the rest is up to you.
