About this deal

In collaboration with the National Deaf Children's Society and disability/mental health charity Barnwood Trust , we asked people to share their experiences with choosing and wearing clear face masks, to bring you tips on what to look for if you want to try one. The mask has already been officially registered with the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a CE marked medical mask, meaning it conforms to health, safety, and environmental protection standards in Europe. Everyone using our remarkable health and care system deserves the best care possible and communication is a vital part of that. All the original databases used in the current study are publicly available. To obtain visual stimuli for the masked TM and SM conditions, a professional graphic designer edited each unmasked stimulus, creating two versions of the same stimulus by superimposing two different masks: a standard medical mask and a transparent one, in which the mouth could be seen through the transparency of a plastic part (Fig. 1A). Measurements and Statistical analysis

The RNID has reported a rise in people losing their hearing aids while putting on and taking off their face mask. It recommends face coverings which tie around your head and don't touch your ears, to keep your hearing aid or cochlear implant secure. The face is the part of an animal’s head that contains three sensory organs: the eyes, nose, and mouth, and through which animals exhibit a wide range of emotions. The face is important for human identity, and harm to it, such as scarring or developmental defects, has a negative impact on the psyche. Young, A. W., Hellawell, D. & Hay, D. C. Configurational information in face perception. Perception 42, 1166–1178 (2013). Ultimately, they provide at least a rudimentary barrier to prevent particles escaping when you breathe or talk, but key issues are likely to be the rigidity of the panel, which may affect fit to the face, and how it impacts breathability. The new deal with US-based company ClearMask will see 250,000 masks delivered to NHS trusts and social care providers across the UK over the next few weeks. Since facemasks could have different impact on the four different Emotions (Fear, Sadness, Happiness and Neutral), we ran four Kruskal–Wallis tests to verify if emotions were significantly affected by the presence of the mask. We found a significant main effect of Condition (NM, SM, TM) for Happiness, Sadness and Fear (H: χ 2(2, N = 122) = 28.69, p< 0.001, ε 2 = 0.237; S: χ 2(2, N = 122) = 37.52, p< 0.001, ε 2 = 0.310; and F: χ 2(2, N = 122) = 19.64, p< 0.001, ε 2 = 0.162)). In contrast, no effect was found for the Neutral faces (N: χ 2(2, N = 122) = 1.11, p = 0.573, ε 2 = 0.009) (Fig. 2B). As concerns Happiness, Sadness and Fear, subsequent post-hoc analysis showed a significant drop for SM with respect to both TM and NM ( p< 0.001; Mann–Whitney tests). Faces are vital for consciously or unintentionally communicating emotion. A frown indicates disapproval, whereas a grin typically indicates happiness. “The essential basis for empathy and the capacity to assess a person’s emotions and forecast the possibility of succeeding behaviors” is being able to read emotion in another’s face. Calvo, M. G. & Nummenmaa, L. Detection of emotional faces: salient physical features guide effective visual search. J. Exp. Psychol. Gen. 137, 471–494 (2008).

Of course, lip-reading doesn’t work for everyone, nor is it everyone’s first choice. It’s important that all NHS employers and services find out what someone’s communication needs are and meet them, in line with the Accessible Information Standard. When fashion blogger Luke Christian, who also happens to be deaf, was a guest on BBC Radio 4, he spoke about face masks and how hard it is for the deaf community. "Since people now have to start wearing masks it’s made me feel a lot more anxious about going and about in public," he said. "Especially into shops because I just don’t know how I’m as a deaf person going to be able to understand people. Because I do rely on lip-reading, and facial expressions/facial movements play a big part in this as well. So if there’s big face masks covering half of people’s faces, then that is something that me personally, and lots of other deaf people, are really going to struggle with." This follows a national and international call to arms in April asking industry to channel their manufacturing power into making PPE for the health and care sector. With around 12 million people in the UK thought to have hearing loss, the masks will be invaluable for people who need to lip-read to communicate during the ongoing response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and beyond.

Acknowledgments

The UV rays from the sun or a tanning booth or bed can increase melanin in your skin causing your skin to appear darker, but this is actually a sign of damage. We welcome the procurement of clear face masks, which has the potential to improve the accessibility of health and social care services for those who rely on seeing facial expressions and lip-reading to communicate, including people who are deaf or have hearing loss. Logan, A. J., Gordon, G. E. & Loffler, G. Contributions of individual face features to face discrimination. Vis. Res. 137, 29–39 (2017). Clear face shields or visors, which you may have seen particularly in hospitality settings, offer good visuals and can be comfortable to wear, but they are not an ideal solution as they have shown to be less effective at preventing particles escaping when worn alone without a mask. The second analysis investigated the effect of different emotions on trust attribution across the three conditions (NM, SM, TM) by analyzing the trust scores obtained by KDEF stimuli. A Friedman test applied to the three Conditions separately showed a main effect of Emotion in all Conditions (NM, χ 2(3, N = 41) = 16.32, p = 0.001, W = 0.133); TM, χ 2(3, N = 41) = 24.46, p< 0.001, W = 0.199; SM, χ 2(3, N = 40) = 45.72, p< 0.001, W = 0.381) (Fig. 3B). In particular, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for multiple comparisons showed that, in all conditions, Happy faces obtained a higher degree of trust with respect to both negative (Fear, Sadness) and Neutral expressions ( p< 0.001). In addition, we found that Sad expressions were scored as more trustworthy than Fearful ones in NM ( p< 0.05), and a similar trend was also observed in the TM ( p = 0.051; see Table 1). Re-identification of masked and unmasked faces

Oosterhof, N. N. & Todorov, A. The functional basis of face evaluation. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 105, 11087–11092 (2008). The re-identification task was aimed at investigating the capability to correctly re-identify unmasked faces previously observed in masked (TM, SM) or unmasked (NM) fashion. To each participant, we presented pictures of unmasked faces (n = 12), some of which (n = 4) already presented in one of the three Conditions (SM, TM, NM) during the first session. For each picture, participants were required to judge whether they have seen the face or not (Fig. 1C). Skin that has lost melanin — the pigment that gives color to human skin, hair, and eyes — is usually called hypopigmented skin. If no pigment is present, the skin is diagnosed as depigmented. Social care providers will also have access to the masks through a new pilot system with Local Resilience Forums. Many cases of translucent skin simply occur due to genetics. If your father or mother have visibly pale or translucent skin, you most likely inherited it from them.Ma, D. S., Correll, J. & Wittenbrink, B. Susan Daniels, the chief executive of the National Deaf Children’s Society, said: “Transparent face masks are fully approved and they could transform the healthcare experience for deaf people. However they communicate, almost all deaf people rely on lip reading and facial expressions. Opaque face masks make these techniques much more difficult and this could seriously affect communication at a time when they might need it the most.”
