The first chapter of the story, "The Granton Star Cause", premiered before completion of the other two parts. [4] It was also shown on Channel 4 on August 3, 1997. [5] The short film offended elements of the UK tabloid press with a depiction of a cynical, jaded, foul-mouthed God. [5] Filming of "A Soft Touch" and "The Acid House" concluded in late 1997. [4] The completed film premiered at the Marché du Film (Cannes Film Market) in May of 1998, [1] and was released in the UK on January 1, 1999. [6]This scintillating, disturbing, and altogether outrageous collection of stories introduces to these shores a young writer already being called "the Scottish Celine of the 1990s" ( Guardian) and "a mad postmodern Roald Dahl" ( Weekend Scotsman). Using a range of approaches from bitter realism to demented fantasy, Irvine Welsh is able to evoke the essential humanity, well hidden as it is, of his generally depraved, lazy, manipulative, and vicious characters. He specializes particularly in cosmic reversals--God turns a hapless footballer into a fly; an acid head and a newborn infant exchange consciousnesses with sardonically unexpected results--always displaying a corrosive wit and a telling accuracy of language and detail. Irvine Welsh is one hilariously dangerous writer and he is bound to create a sensation. Bleak, heart-rending and incredibly funny, Welsh's follow up to "Trainspotting" is a worthy successor to an incredibly tough act to follow.

Glue (2001) was a return to the locations, themes and episodic form of Trainspotting, telling the stories of four characters spanning several decades in their lives and the bonds that held them together. There is alot of Scottish dialect here which can be hard to read but is amazing to try and read out loud, in my terrible Scottish accent....which tends to drift into Scouse and Welsh. But if you've read Trainspotting you will be prepared for this. The Acid House is outrageous, over the top, and offensive. The Acid House will never be accused of being too clever or subtle. In fact, from a literary standpoint, Welsh's treatment of his subject matter is akin to administering a CPR heart massage with a sledge hammer ... and vomiting in the patient's mouth while administering artificial respiration. Despite the supernatural premise of two of the three stories, the horror in The Acid House is not the traditional ghosts and goblins type. Rather, it stems from a deep dread of entrapment, from awful bodily metamorphosis, and from an exploration of the abysmal depths of the debased human condition. After the remarkable success of Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh, set out on a conscious mission to weed out the type of popular vote that somebody like he could never be comfortable with. Praise the Lord because the product was a much darker, grittier second film called The Acid House, three short stories whose common ground is the Scottish working classes. In truth the third segment is actually a sprawling mess but it at least shows how horribly wrong some of Welsh's bizarre story lines translate to the screen. In spite of this, director Paul McGuigan, superbly brings Welsh's other two stories to life and it's surely praise indeed when one can exclude a full third of a movie and still class it as one of their all time favourites.Irvine Welsh fears relegation for Hibs after poor start to campaign".
